Car batteries come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from heavy industrial car batteries to car batteries that can be lifted by hand, car battery technology has come a long way over the past century. Car batteries have evolved from large clunky units into much smaller units that can be more easily adapted to car and truck engines.
At Arnold Motor Supply, we’ve heard it all. Here is a guide to some of the more common myths going around about vehicle batteries and electrical systems, and the battery facts you should commit to memory instead.
Battery Fact: A battery can–and will–wear out requiring it to be replaced. You should look at your vehicle's battery as a replaceable part like wiper blades, filters, and brake pads. Most car batteries usually only last between three and five years before they need to be replaced. However, car or truck owners who use their vehicles infrequently may find car batteries last anywhere from three to ten years, hinging on a variety of factors including use, but also including temperature, humidity, the state of the electrical system and more.
Battery Fact: Not all car batteries are created equal, and not every battery is interchangeable. This is not just true for the types of batteries but the brands, too. Some battery brands are better for your vehicle than others. High price does not automatically equal high quality. If you have any questions about what brand of battery you should use, ask your professional technician or one of our knowledgeable counter professionals at any of our locations.
Battery Fact: A short drive is rarely enough time to charge a battery back to a significant enough charge to be useful. Consider getting it recharged–or maybe even replaced–by a professional. There are a ton of different possible reasons as to why the battery is drained, but a 5-minute trip around the block will not fix the issue, though it may get you enough power to start it up on the next time, it’s best to have it looked at.
Battery Fact: It’s probably the most important, but it’s not the only electrical component you have to worry about. There are plenty of others like the starter and alternator.
