Here's how to know when to change your vehicle's many important filters.
Most vehicles have the same basic kinds of filters, though the number, placement, and size can be as varied as the kinds of vehicles they're filtering for. From heavy-duty, off-road, off-highway equipment and machinery application to a zippy little scooters, anything with a combustion engine will need filters. Here's the main kinds that we see here at Arnold Motor Supply:
Every engine needs air in order to function--the combustion part of the internal combustion engine requires a constant supply of fresh air. An air filter's main purpose is to keep this air going into your engine clean. Over time, it will get clogged with dirt and debris, which can restrict airflow and lead to engine damage.
Most carmakers recommend that you change your air filter at least once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, this varies depending on your driving habits and the kind of vehicle you drive. If you do a lot of stop-and-go city driving in a dusty area, you may need to change your air filter more often. Conversely, if you primarily drive on the highway in a newer car, you may be able to go longer between changes.
Oil filters clean the oil as it circulates through the engine, removing dirt, metal shavings, and other contaminants. This helps keep the oil clean and prevent build-up that can damage your engine.
Your car's owner's manual should have the specific recommendation for how often to change your oil filter, but it's generally recommended that you do so every time you change your oil. This is typically every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first.
A fuel filter filters the gas or diesel going into your engine, keeping contaminants out and preventing damage to your engine. Pollutants introduced to an engine via the fuel system are often the leading cause of engine wear.
Again, consult your car's owner's manual for the specific recommendation, but most fuel filters need to be replaced every 20,000-30,000 miles, or about every two years or so. Some modern vehicles have filters that last twice as long, however.
A cabin air filter filters the air going into your vehicle's cabin, keeping out pollen, dust, and other allergens. This helps keep the air inside your car clean and fresh.
Cabin air filters should be changed every 15,000-30,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.
A hydraulic filters filter the hydraulic fluid going into your vehicle's hydraulic system. This helps keep the system clean and running smoothly. The types of vehicles that have hydraulic fluid are typically those with a lift or other moving parts.
Hydraulic systems for tractors and other farm equipment are typically designed to run for several thousand hours before the filter needs to be changed. Because the types of vehicles and conditions vary so much between implementations, it's important to consult an expert.
